Kath Leone is an artist and textile designer from Cape Town, South Africa.
Kath’s experience in designing textiles for fashion has played a role in shaping her art style and lends itself well to her printmaking process. Reimagining scenes from the natural world, Kath is inspired by the colour overlaying in old-fashioned chintz woodblock printing techniques. She creates illustrations and then uses silk screen printing to produce limited edition artworks with multiple layers of translucent colours.
Kath has a condition called synaesthesia, specifically grapheme-colour and chromesthesia. This saturates her mind and life, influencing her artistic practice and explaining her obsession with colour and colour mixing. Her detailed pieces evoke a subtle sense of nostalgia and have a slightly fantastical charm, which she hopes will bring joy to the viewer.
